Something We’re All Forgetting

June 07, 2020

Happy Sunday!

You know, I really don’t think I have to explain the current state of America and social media right now. You know what’s going on. You’ve seen the links and lists of ways to help.

And if you’re like me, this has all been really overwhelming. So much is happening so fast.

But I think that, in this rush to do everything possible to support our black brothers and sisters, we’re forgetting one of the most important things to do to enact change.

Pray.

As a Catholic, I firmly believe that prayer can change hearts and lives. It’s a direct plea to our God and Father, asking Him to help right wrongs and heal brokenness. It allows us to grow in our relationship with Him. And I do believe that He listens and answers every single one of them, even if it’s not in the way we expect.

This year, we have more things to pray for than ever - especially right now.

Yet whenever I see people discuss the protests and #blacklivesmatter movement, and they spell out ways we can all help, prayer is never one of them.

I’m not saying that the steps they give are irrelevant - far from it! Actively taking steps against racism through speaking out and supporting others is fantastic.

But at the end of the day, there’s only so much we as humans can do. It’s a sad truth that sin IS in the world, and it will be until the end of the world.

There’s also a Savior who died for our sins against the dignity of human life, and he IS listening.

So please. No matter what else you do, pray.

Pray for an end to racism.
Pray for an end to senseless violence.
Pray for the day when everyone, regardless of race, can stand side-by-side and not feel afraid of discrimination.
And pray for all of us, that we can work hard to recognize the value of each and every unique human life.

Lord, please, heal our nation, and heal our world.

  2. AMEN!!! Such a wonderful reminder! I've never liked the phrase "All we can do is pray." It always sounds like it's making prayer out like nothing. We should erase the "all" and say "We CAN pray!" because prayer is one of the most powerful things in existence.

Yes, we definitely need to stand up and speak out and talk about these things. But I firmly believe prayer should ALWAYS come first. We need to open our hearts to God and pull in His wisdom and love before tackling ANY issue.

Prayer is a powerful, powerful things, and it is definitely what we should all be doing right now.

Thank you for this beautiful reminder. <3

    1. That's SO TRUE - I never thought about that quote like that. "We CAN pray!" is such a better statement!

And I 100% agree with everything you said. We really need to turn to prayer before everything we do!

  3. <3 <3 Amen. I've actually seen people asserting that prayer is the LEAST helpful thing you can do, because it doesn't accomplish anything, and that angers me so deeply, because our God is powerful enough to do anything, and prayer should be our first response, not our last resort. Thank you for saying this. <3

    1. I haven't seen people saying that, but it makes me so sad that prayer's being seen as something that does nothing. :( God is SO powerful - he can answer our prayers! Amen!

  6. YESSS THISS. Honestly, I'm a little ashamed to admit this hasn't crossed my mind lately. I mean, yes, I personally HAVE been praying about everything that's going on. But when I see all the ways people are sharing to help, it hasn't even occurred to me that they're leaving out the most important thing of all.

Thank you for this. I wish everyone could read it. <3

    1. THANK YOU.
I haven’t seen anything about it either, and I’ll admit, it really took a while for me to notice it. <3

  7. Thanks for pointing this out! It's so easy to forget prayer with everything happening. It's strange how something so amazing and powerful as prayer is left at the sideline. It should be at the front!

    1. AGREED - and it really is strange that we put prayer on the side . . .

  8. Yes!! Prayer! So important, yet we don't do it enough, because we humans like to take things into our own hands, and prayer is not taking things into our own hands, it's taking things out, and giving it to the Only One who can really do anything about it. Loved this!

  9. Yes! Racism is a horrible thing that needs to end. I've been praying to end racism for quite awhile now, but this was a good reminder that God can do anything and fix anything.

  10. YES this post. Prayer is something we can easily do any day, every day, no matter when or in what circumstance. Humans can only do so much!

  11. Everything going on im the world has definitely been crazy- and I really appreciate people sharing resources and donating. I also think prayer is definitely something that everyone who believes in some sort of God can do. But I do think that we give up too early, you know? There's so much we could collectively achieve that is actually possible but we stop after sharing a donation link and think that there's nothing else in our power, that the only thing left to do is pray, when in fact we can lobby and do so much. Idk that just occured to me. Beyond a point, there's some things that we don't have in control, which is where praying comes into question, but I think a lot of us see individual action as the most we can do, you know? And beyond that there's only prayer? When in actuality there's collective action, too.
That made no sense haha I hope you understood it XD

    1. Nah, you totally made sense, don’t worry! :D And I definitely agree that collective action is so important - if we don’t stand together and take actions as a group, nothing is going to happen. :)
