7 Reasons Why You Should Read the Amulet Series

September 23, 2018

So I was planning on writing a book review today, but then I realized:

I literally haven’t read anything besides Lord of the Rings that is worth reviewing.

I know. Sad.

But: in two days, book eight of the Amulet series is coming out!

In celebration of this release (because the fandom has been waiting for YEARS, I kid you not), here are 7 reasons why you NEED to read this series!

(Also let’s pretend that I didn’t forget about writing a post until yesterday. It’s been a long week, guys, and I got my wisdom teeth taken out on Friday. Bleh.)

(I will also say that none of these images are mine. They are all from Google Images)
I mean, come on! Look at these masterpieces!

In case this is your first time hearing of it, the story follows siblings Emily and Navin as they find an alternate dimension. The catch? The Amulet Emily's found that enables her to use magic doesn’t have the best of intentions (but to say anymore would be SPOILERS).

To be honest, I hated the first book, but everything after that was SO STINKING GOOD that I just had to keep reading! (I don’t know . . . the first book was weeeeeeird.)
Emily is highly relatable, as the insecure girl unsure of her actions and her own talents, but can be brave when she has to. She struggles with grief over her dead father. Navin is the tech “genius” from our world who really only plays video games, let’s be honest.
Because seriously, he deserves a point all to himself. He’s mentioned in my redemption arc post, but he’s virtually the Zuko (from ATLA) of the Amulet series. (Except, you know, he’s not obsessed with honor.) He hunts Emily down throughout the first book, but . . . well, you’ll just have to read it and see what happens! #sorrynotsorry

The Amulet is similar the Ring from Lord of the Rings, except it’s - dare I say - creepier? It tries to control the Stonekeepers (those who use the Ring), for its own purposes. It literally SPEAKS to Emily - which is really cool and weird at the same time.
Though it’s a kids book, it doesn’t shy away from discussing such things as ill parents, grief over dead parents, and suicide (although it doesn’t discuss this one quite as much as I would have liked. It shows a man trying to kill himself, but they don’t exactly say this is wrong - they just show the consequences of his actions.).

Seriously. The seventh book is that good. I’m not kidding. I don’t even know how many times I’ve read it, but the line Emily says right before something happens gets me EVERY TIME. (Also, Trellis is on the cover. <3)

Well, there you have it! So, are you going to go pick up these books? You totally should! You will not regret it!

  3. I might have to check out this series--it sounds like something I would enjoy.

And I haven't had my wisdom teeth taken out--yet. My orthodontist says there starting to come in, so I'll probably have to get them taken out within the next year. *cries*

  5. Love this post, Nicole! I've never heard of this series, but it looks great! ;) I'll have to see if my library has them. :)

Ah yes, wisdom teeth x_x. I had mine taken out earlier this year, and I hope that yours heal quickly. Mine wasn't too bad, although I couldn't smile / talk for about a week and ate primarily mashed potatoes, jello, pudding, and mac and cheese, xD. How many did you have out?

    Great post! <3 <3

    1. Thank you so much, Allison! I hope your library has them.....it seems they never have the best books, though....

Yep, that sounds like my experience! (Plus a lot more ice cream.....XD) I had the two on the bottom taken out, because the top ones don’t seem to have any problems......but even just two was brutal!

<3 <3 Thanks for reading, Allison!

  7. Mind if I ask what the Amulet series is? I’m guessing a graphic novel, but I could be wrong...😂

    1. Haha, yes, it is a fantasy graphic novel series! It kind of reminds me of a contemporary, dark Narnia....

  8. Hmmm, sounds like something I might have to check out! Thanks for sharing, Nicole!

Also, I hope your wisdom teeth removal holes (I have no idea what I'm saying lol ??) heals well. I'm kinda paranoid that one day I'll have to have mine removed and I'm not ready for that. I'm still a little traumatized from that time the dentist patched three deep cavities without anesthesia.... *cough*

    1. Ooooo, yes, you should definitely read them!

Thanks, Lilian! And yes, so far they have. I personally did not use anesthesia. But if you have to get them taken out, I recommend listening to calming music and closing your eyes. (And it’s an excuse to eat ice cream and milkshakes for a week, since it is kind of painful.......maybe I’ll just write a blog post about this. :) ) And yikes, that does sound scary! Definitely can’t blame you there....
