Seven Fictional Characters of Springtime
May 03, 2020Happy Sunday!
I'm not sure if you knew this or not, but spring is my favorite season of the year. The trees are growing their leaves back, the sun has been shining more, and I can finally go outside without shivering.
This is a little bit of a random post, but sometime last week I thought, "Hm, what are some characters that have a spring vibe/aesthetic?"
And here we are. XD
Ultimately, for me, spring is about hope and laughter and new life. And to me, these characters really reflect those aspects, either in their personality or appearance.
there will be 0 spoilers for all of these. also, none of these pictures are mine - all credit to the original owners, and some links will be provided. :)
Kaori Miyazono
"You exist inside spring."
I will freely admit it - Kaori is 100% the inspiration behind this post. This girl is full of life and energy and hope, always smiling and peppy. Her conversations with Kousei usually leave me feeling happy.
Plus, the aesthetic for the first few episodes of Your Lie in April is GORGEOUS. Spring in Japan looks so beautiful: cherry blossom petals are in most shots, and landscape scenes are full of colors. <3 <3
(also, this is your warning to watch Your Lie in April, because I’m planning a spoiler-y analytical post for June, and you do NOT want this show spoiled for you XD)
Aslan
"When he shakes his mane, we shall have spring again."
Aslan is another character that is very interconnected to spring. His arrival in Narnia literally brings an end to the seemingly-endless winter that plagues the land. He’s even got a prophecy talking about it!
Not only does he physically bring spring to Narnia, but he also brings life and hope to many of its inhabitants, either by giving them motivation to fight back against the Queen or freeing them from the spell that turned them to stone. Reading about him always gives me images of budding trees and cloudless skies. :D
Lucy Pevensie
"But as for Lucy, she was always gay and golden-haired, and all the princes in those parts desired her to be their Queen . . ."
The hopefulness of spring really shows in Lucy's personality. There's a scene in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe that always comes back to me when I think of her. Spring is finally returning to Narnia, and Peter, Susan, and Lucy are walking through some gorgeous scenery. At one point, pink petals blow past Lucy, and she grins in amazement as the petals form the shape of a girl.
To me, that really sums up Lucy: a girl full of hope and wonder. It's no wonder that she's drawn to Aslan, and it's no wonder that she stayed "gay and golden-haired." Throughout the books, she never truly loses her childhood innocence and joy. <3
Kelsier
“I am the one thing you can never kill. I am Hope.”
Kelsier is the odd one out in his world of ash and tyranny. The Lord Ruler (aka The Big Bad Guy) has reigned for like a thousand years and enslaved the general population. Most people are depressed and just trying to make the best of things.
And then there’s Kelsier, who smiles to remind himself that the Lord Ruler hasn’t broken him yet. Who gathers people together with visions of a better life, one without a tyrant heading over them. Who is literally the symbol of hope, and who brings it to hundreds of people.
Spring may not be shown in this series, but if there’s anyone who has the spirit of spring, it’s this man. <3

Fin
*couldn't find a quote. sorry, Brooke XD*
Fin, is, hands-down, the ray of sunshine in the Blood Race series. He's such a voice of encouragement and hope to literally everyone, even when he's having trouble seeing the light himself. It's no wonder that he's considered the cinnamon roll. XD
Also, book three features some AMAZING Irish wooded imagery that just screams spring and summer. These woods are a drastic contrast to the dark dystopian world in which the rest of the book is set.
Pippin Took
"We may stand, if only on one leg, or at least be left still upon our knees."
PIPPIN MY BOY. AMAZING CHARACTER. LOVE HIM.
Sorry, just getting that out of the way.
Pippin Took is a character that wildly contrasts with almost every other character in LOTR. While most people are Very Serious About the Fellowship's Mission and Destroying the Ring, Pippin is just . . . there? He only knows what is happening 50% of the time, and the other 50% is spent panicking or getting yelled at.
And yet, Pippin brings something to the Fellowship that they wouldn't have had before. Smiles. Laughter. And someone to yell at. XD And it's Pippen who brings hope to the men of Gondor and to Gandalf when the final battle approaches.
Give this man a pint.
Samwise Gamgee
"It's only a passing thing, this shadow."
And this is the Most Hopeful Character of the Entire Lord of the Rings Series. Yes, Pippin has that spontaneous personality, but Sam is the one that truly never loses hope, not when he's faced with the fires of Mount Doom itself, not when Frodo is captured, not even when Frodo takes the Ring for himself.
(And he also has the Most Hopeful Speech of All Time, which I want to memorize one day because it's so powerful.)
Not only does Sam persist in the face of almost certain failure, but he also pushes Frodo to keep going. Towards the end of The Return of the King, he asks Frodo if he remembers the Shire in an effort to motivate Frodo. And the Ring-bearer even says, "Frodo wouldn't have made it this far without Sam." Sam encompasses a springtime hope, one that never fades and lasts long after the last leaves have fallen.

If you’ve got any characters that remind you of springtime, by all means leave them down in the comments! I love talking about fictional characters (could you tell? XD).
(Also, happy early Star Wars day! I was going to write a post about Star Wars, but you can read my letter to the franchise here. XD)

What a fun idea for a post!!! I LOVE seeing characters and things as aesthetics like this! This is so much funnn!!!
ReplyDeleteI 1000% agree on Aslan, Lucy, Pippin, and Sam. YES. They are such sunshiny, precious, HOPEFUL characters--just like spring. I shamefully don't know the others, but they all sounds AMAZING. What is Kelsier from? I want to meet this guy!
Now I want you to do a post series of characters for each season! THIS IS JUST TOO GREAT!
Aaaahhhh, thank you!! I wasn’t sure if anyone would like this, so thank you!!
DeleteAck, YES, they are AMAZING characters! (Kelsier is from the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson - it’s a really great series overall too!)
Okay, this will definitely happen! THANK YOU! <3
Ah!!! Aslan, Lucy, Sam, and Pippin!!! I love them so much!! I seriously need to reread the Narnia books again. Maybe LotR too, but that's a bigger commitment. XD I love this idea of characters that say spring!
ReplyDeleteYesss, you should definitely reread them!! (Come to think of it, I’m due for a reread too XD) Haha, LOTR is quite a commitment. XD Thank you, MovieCritic! :D

ReplyDeleteYay, I’m glad you enjoyed it!! Aaaaahh, how are you liking it?? SAM <3 <3
Deleteahh i'm loving it! i can't believe it's taken me this long to finally read lotr. i'm still 3/4 thru two towers, and i'm hoping to read more once finals are over next week. ;)
DeleteThat's awesome - I'm so glad you're liking it so far!! <3
DeleteYES THIS POST IDEA IS SO BEAUTIFUL!!! i definitely agree with you about Kaori... i sadly don't know any of the other characters but just added all the books to my TBR! (and ooh i'm so excited about the Your Lie In April post.. i'd better finish watching it before that lol) ❤❤
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU SO MUCH, ASH!!!! Kaori is SUCH a springtime character, though . . . (aaahhh, yay - don't worry, I'll probably procrastinate on it XD)
DeleteI love Lucy and Aslan! My dad wanted my baby sister's middle name to be Pippin. We all said no. I hope you have a good day!
ReplyDeleteYess, those two are amazing! XD XD Oh my gosh, that would be great - but I wouldn't want my middle name to be Pippin either. XD You too! :D
DeleteSuch a cute post! I'm not really a spring-time person (hot summer days, man!!) but I agree with your character choices!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Julian!! (haha, yes, I cannot wait for summer days!)
DeleteI am so happy that Sam made this list!! He's the best!
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to think of other spring characters and none are coming to mind just now...I feel like maybe Cisco or Caitlin? Possibly?
I agree with Christine: you should definitely do a series with characters for each season! I'm so here for that!
I agree completely - Sam deserves a spot here!
DeleteOooo, yes, Cisco would have been a great choice! (letting down the #Cisco4Life club XD)
I'll definitely plan on it - thank you so much!
I just watched the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I have to say I probably like Sam's character best, but I'm not entirely sure. Great post Nicole!
ReplyDeleteYou did?? That's awesome - what'd you think? Haha, yes, Sam is a great character - I'm glad you liked him! Thank you! :D
DeleteI love this post!! I haven't read most of them-- ASLAN AND LUCY THOUGH <3 Where is Kelsier from?
ReplyDeleteASLAN AND LUCY FOR LIFE <3 <3 <3 Kelsier is from the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson! :D
DeleteKELSIER!!!!!! Oh man I love Kelsier. And yes, he has SUCH a spring vibe. I LOVE HIM. I LOVE HIS UNCRUSHABLE CHEERINESS AND HOPE. KELSIER. *screams* (also am sobbing because....yeah)
ReplyDelete*calms self*
All the Narnia characters, yes. I adore this idea, actually! Characters with spring vibes! (Spring is a BEAUTIFUL season. I'm slightly partial to autumn myself, but when spring comes I always waffle because SPRING IS AMAZING.)
And PIPPIN. And SAM. I've been rereading LotR and I have ALL THE FEELS and I love Pippin's clueless optimism and how he remains such a bright ray of sunshine even when he becomes a bit less clueless...and SAM. Oh, Sam. <3 <3 <3
*runs around in a circle screaming because FEELS*
(I now want to watch Your Lie in April. I feel like it won't ever happen, because I rarely watch anything, and if I do it's old Westerns with my sister or an umpteenth rewatch of an A-Team episode with my whole family...we're not at all obsessed...but I WANT to. It sounds lovely. And cherry-tree blossoms are the PRETTIEST THING. I think that's partially why Mulan is so great. The AESTHETICS, dontchaknow.)
KELSIER. IS. THE. BEST. AAAHHHH. (don't worry, I'm sobbing with you - I'm never going to be okay)
DeleteAaahhh, spring is amazing! (Autumn is SO PRETTY, too, though - and it's nice to have colder weather after the SCORCHING SEASON that is summer XD)
You're rereading LOTR too! That's awesome! And Sam and Pippin are SO AMAZING. <3 <3 <3
*THE FEELS ARE KILLING ME*
(Haha, that's me with a TON of TV shows - I've got a giant list of things to watch that I don't even touch. XD (and A-Team obsessions are WELCOME here! XD) Ack, yes, cherry blossom petals are SO PRETTY - and I completely agree that Mulan is made so much better with that :D)
I love characters that are full of hope, like spirng!
ReplyDeleteastorydetective.blogspot.com
Same here - those characters are such a ray of sunshine!
DeleteTHIS IS SUCH A LOVELY POST, NICOLE. <3
ReplyDeleteYesss Aslan is PERFECT for this!! And I really, really, really want to watch The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe now. SUCH an amazing movie.
KELSIEEEER!! GEE NICOLE I HAVE NOOO IDEA WHY THAT LINE WOULD BREAK YOU. NOT AT ALL. *is still broken*
"He only knows what is happening 50% of the time, and the other 50% is spent panicking or getting yelled at." That made me laugh out loud and I couldn't stop for a minute. xD
SAMMM MY BOY!! ACK I can't think about him asking Frodo if he remembers the Shire or I'll want to bawl my eyes out. Dx And YES NICOLE LET'S BOTH MEMORIZE HIS SPEECH. IT WILL BE A GLORIOUS ACCOMPLISHMENT.

THANK YOU, EMILY! <3
DeleteHaha, saaaame - I haven't seen that movie in forever, and I really miss it. :_(
ME NEITHER. I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND! WHY??? *will never recover*
Haha, thank you! That was the goal XD
SAM MY HEART! Gosh dang it, now I'm tearing up - RotK is wayyy too emotional for me. OKAY LET'S DO IT. I WILL TOTALLY TAKE THIS ON.
I love this post idea, Nicole! Awesome choice of quotes. :)
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you, Kathryn! :D
DeleteI love this concept! Sam is a perfect choice.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Skye!
DeleteASLAN AND LUCY AND THE LOTR CHARACTERS YAAASSSSS. I LOVE THIS LIST.
ReplyDeleteThe first character I think of is Anne from Anne of Green Gables. There's something super spring-y about her bright, cheerful personality <33
AAAACK THANK YOU LILA!!!!!
DeleteOoo, I've been meaning to read those books for a while, but from the little I've heard about her, I agree completely!!
Welcome to the comment section! I love hearing what you guys think and seeing you guys talk. Just remember to keep it clean, and as always, check back for my replies! <3
