The Shared WIP Tag: Week Three
November 16, 2018Happy Friday, everyone!
We’re almost halfway through NaNo. Hard to believe. This month has been lasting forever!
But here’s your Friday procrastination post that’s covering a rather fun topic:
Villains.
Introduce the main antagonist of your book!
In my story, the villain (although he doesn’t have a huge part to play yet) is the Steward of Kianda’s throne, Lorcan. The Steward of the throne is a stand-in for the King until Rowan comes of age (the King is dead, by the way).
What do you (the writer) have in common with the antagonist? What do you not have in common?
Um . . . Well. That’s *nervous laughter* a good question.
I would say that we both fight for our beliefs and become offended when people oppose us. He pretends to be tough, but inside he’s very sensitive against criticism. And we also both over-plan certain things, but don’t even think about others.
And, as for differences, he’s more murderous than I am??? #dontask
What does your antagonist do when he/she is mad? Do they have a soft spot?
Lorcan gets very physical when he is angry. His favorite pastime is throwing new wooden chairs against a stone wall, thoroughly breaking them. XD Yeah, he might have slight anger issues....
As for a soft spot, I discuss that later down. Read on....
Who is your antagonist’s worst enemy? What is their greatest fear?
Lorcan's worst enemy is kind of himself, and also his family.
Himself - he never really tries to better himself. He thinks that the condition he is in right now is perfect, so he doesn’t need to grow.
His family - he feels like his brother stole the throne from him, and has never forgiven him or his children for that "wrongdoing".
What is your antagonist’s weapon of choice?
Lorcan's weapon of choice would be (this will sound weird) other people. He doesn’t really like to personally hurt someone, but he would 10/10 send someone else to do the dirty work for him. One of his philosophy is that he shouldn’t be guilty for something that he made his servants do. (Definitely not problematic, no sirree.)
How would your antagonist surprise your reader?
As I said above, he has a soft spot - a woman from the village. Usually he dislikes villagers and thinks they’re peasants and weak. But he wishes to marry a younger woman who - is a villager.
I have no idea how this guy justifies things.
What is one thing your villain would never do?
He would never do the dirty work of killing someone himself.
Lorcan would also never stoop to "women's work." Although most people believe that women should be respected and that the work they do is honorable, he holds to an old, demeaning tradition that women are inferior.
What lie does your antagonist believe about the MC?
Lorcan has never met Faye, but he thinks that Rowan is just like his father: a usurper and too self-righteous for his own good.
What is your favorite thing about your antagonist?
I like how Lorcan has the courage to do what he believes is right. And he also likes music (although it’s more rap-like than actual music, but still).
If your antagonist was your MC, what would your book look like?
The book would be about his conquest to the throne, and we’d see into his mind and probably think that he was seriously messed-up for trying to take childrens' lives.

Oh, he sounds like a well rounded villain! I love your answer to what the story would be like from his perspective.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm one of your new followers . . . It always takes me awhile to follow a blog, because I want to be certain I'll actually give it the time it deserves to reading and commenting ;D

Thanks, Keturah!!
DeleteAnd welcome! *waves* Haha, yeah, I do the exact same thing....
There's nothing I appreciate more than a well-rounded, complex villain, and Lorcan sounds like just that.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Lila! I’m so glad he seems complex.
DeleteThrowing chairs against the walls. Nice. :) Really shows how committed a villain is to their deeds. lol
ReplyDeleteDon't think I've ever had a character do that yet, though I've had quite a large amount of people being thrown across or onto tables, usually smashing them in the process...
Maybe I'll regret it, but I want to hear more about the village woman he's fallen in love with. :D
Haha, yeah....I still need to write a scene with him actually doing that, though. 😬
DeleteOoo, yes, throwing characters across tables is always a good idea.....very intimidating! :)
A lot of that is #spoilers, but hopefully there’s a happy ending involved! .......maybe. XD
Your villain definitely sounds like quite the character!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on 30 followers! :)
-Brooklyne
Thank you so much, Brooklyne!! <3
DeleteOooh, he sounds really interesting! Is it bad that I really like the fact that he throws chairs at the wall? Lol.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite type of villain is a villain who doesn't consider themselves evil, someone who is like a real person - with the same thoughts and struggles instead of just being some heartless monster.
Thanks, Julia! And definitely not - that’s one of my favorite things about him! XD
DeleteOoo, yess, those villains are always incredible! It’s always nice when they’re like real people instead of I HAVE NO MOTIVATION, BUT I WILL DESTROY THE WORLD ANYWAYS.
Ha, intriguing. :D I'm kinda like Lorcan- I pretend to be tough, but criticism hits me hard. xD
ReplyDeleteHaha, same......relatable. XD
DeleteA villain that's very sensitive to criticism? that sounds so cool, Nicole!! and I love his pastime. xD (I recently read a fanfic where the villain had to get his secretary to go buy more tables - "what for, sir??" "...you know what for...")
ReplyDelete(I'm pretty sure we were all like "um, how are we different... well, uh, my antagonist is more murderous than me?")
- Jem Jones
Haha, thanks, Jem! And WHERE IS THAT FANFIC?? because honestly, the villains never seem to run out of things to destroy - they should be broke by now. XD
Delete(Oh my word, though, yeeesss, because we’re really not that different, and it’s kind of scary. :)
Welcome to the comment section! I love hearing what you guys think and seeing you guys talk. Just remember to keep it clean, and as always, check back for my replies! <3
